It was Stephenie Meyer that made me read some of the great British classic works.
As we well know, Bella Swan loves classics. Her compilation of Jane Austen’s works was one of the books that came with her to Forks and is not unusual to find Bella reading Shakespeare or Brontë.
Stephenie Meyer seems to be a classic fan, too. We can think that, not only because she refers them often but also by the way that each of her books is related with a classic.
For example, both “Twilight” and “Pride and Prejudice” (Jane Austen) have, in my opinion, the same basic lines of story: Edward Cullen seems to hate Bella Swan when they met as well as Fitzwilliam Darcy ignore/depreciate Elizabeth Bennet. Later, both Edward and Mr. Darcy start to be fascinated with them.
There are also some similarities in the characters, namely the pride and sarcasm of Mr. Darcy and Edward and the stubbornness of Elizabeth and Bella.
The next text is an extract of “Twilight” where Bella refers “Pride and Prejudice” and other Jane Austen’s works.
“I had a small collection of books that came with me to Forks, the shabbiest
volume being a compilation of the works of Jane Austen. (...)
My favorites were Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. I’d read the first most
recently, so I started into Sense and Sensibility, only to remember after I
began chapter three that the hero of the story happened to be named Edward.”

Como sabemos, Bella Swan adora clássicos ingleses pois a sua colectânea de obras de Jane Austen acompanhou-a na mudança de Phoenix para Forks e não é raro encontrá-la a ler Shakespeare ou Brontë.
Também Stephenie Meyer parece ser fã de clássicos da literatura inglesa. Podemos fazer esta suposição, não só pelas referências às obras/autores mas também pela maneira como cada um dos seus livros se relaciona com um clássico.
Por exemplo, “Twilight/Crepúsculo” e “Orgulho e Preconceito” (Jane Austen) têm, na minha opinião, as mesmas linhas de base para a construção da história: Edward Cullen parece odiar Bella quando se conhecem assim como Fitzwilliam Darcy ignora e despreza Elizabeth Bennet. Mais tarde, tanto Edward como Mr. Darcy começam a sentir-se fascinados por elas.
Existem também semelhanças no carácter das personagens, nomeadamente o orgulho e sarcasmo de Mr. Darcy e Edward e a teimosia de Elizabeth e Bella.
O texto seguinte é um excerto de “Twilight/Crepúsculo”, no qual Bella refere “Orgulho e Preconceito” e outras obras de Jane Austen.

Lera o primeiro há menos tempo e, por conseguinte, comecei por Sensibilidade e Bom Senso apenas para me lembrar, depois de ter começado a leitura do terceiro capítulo, de que o herói da história se chamava, por acaso, Edward.”
